Further Reading
Charlotte's
philosophy of education stands in stark contrast to much that prevails
in schools today, and her works are influential in home-schooling
circles. It is, however, the vision of
Ambleside Schools International to establish
Charlotte Mason Education as the ideal method of teaching children in a
school context. Although her ideas are tried and tested, and are as relevant today as they were a
century ago, they are not widely known. For those interested in finding out more, we recommend the following resources:
Charlotte Mason's own books are published as The Original Homeschooling Series. All six volumes are also available in a modern paraphrase by Leslie Laurio, as free downloads online, or in printed form at www.kalahari.net or www.loot.co.za. For more about Charlotte's life and work, we recommend Charlotte Mason Reviewed by Jenny King, or The Story of Charlotte Mason by Essex Cholmondley. We also recommend When Children Love to Learn, edited by Elaine Cooper, with contributions from Maryellen St. Cyr (co-founder of Ambleside Schools International and former principal of Ambleside School of Fredericksburg). For a Charlotte Mason-inspired perspective on how to give their children a solid foundation in life, parents are strongly encouraged to read For The Children's Sake, by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay. For works that underscore the universality of Charlotte Mason's philosophy, we recommend that parents read The Epidemic, by Dr. Robert Shaw, Boundaries with Kids by Dr Henry Cloud and Dr John Townsend, Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman, and Punished by Rewards, by Alfie Kohn. |
