Phonics & Reading: Students in Grades 1 and 2 study a formal program of
sight and sound correspondence to develop skills in pronunciation and spelling. Phonics rules are taught for practical
application, not rote drills. Phonetic readers are used to reinforce developing skills.
Picture Study: The great ideas of men and women throughout history are revealed
in their works, whether expressed through language, music or the visual arts. Each year, children are
made familiar with two great artists. They are presented with a colour reproduction of a significant painting to
study for a few minutes, after which they narrate what they have observed. Students learn about the artists' lives and
times, and also experience their style and technique by reproducing some of their paintings.
Poetry: Two poets and their works are introduced each year. Students are given
a volume of each poet's works, and memorise certain poems individually and corporately for personal enjoyment as well as formal
recitation. Poetry is presented to be appreciated for the ideas it conveys, rather than as a specimen to be dissected.
Similarly, the works of
Shakespeare are studied as much for
their rich language as for their wealth of living ideas.
Read-aloud: In all grades, teachers and students share in the delight of a book that
is selected purely for the great pleasure of reading it aloud.
Recitation: Students rehearse inspirational passages and verses from Scripture,
poetry or history.
Science: In Grade 3 students become familiar with animals and fossils through readings,
drawings and hands-on activities. From Grade 4 though to Senior Primary, branches of physical, earth and life sciences are
taught each year. In high school, the sciences of biology, physics, chemistry and human behaviour are studied
more comprehensively.
Singing & Music: Students' voices and ears are trained individually and
collectively. The harmonies and melodies of classical and folk music are introduced through song, dance and instrument.
All students, in choral groups, perform at school, and occasionally in the community.
Tales & Fables/Myths & Legends:
In the early grades, traditional stories from a variety of cultures are read to the students, to warm the imagination and instruct
the conscience.
